CAPEXEL Makes Move to Repurpose Two Former Ohio Coal Plants

CAPEXEL has acquired a pair of retired coal-fired power plants in Ohio with an eye on demolishing them and repurposing the sites.

Wildwood-based CAPEXEL is performing the remediation on the J.M. Stuart Station and Killen Station facilities in Adams County, Ohio — located about 70 miles southeast of Cincinnati — previously owned by AES Ohio Generation LLC, a subsidiary of DPL Inc. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In a statement, Ron Froh, the CEO and president of CAPEXEL, said the firm plans to work closely with local officials and others in the community as it enters into initial demolition and remediation operations for the plant sites.

The J.M. Stuart Station began generating power in 1974 while Killen, with one coal-fired generating unit and one oil-fired unit, began operations in 1982. Both plants closed in May 2018.

CAPEXEL will address environmental needs of each site, including remediation, groundwater monitoring, abatement, decommissioning and demolition.

In November 2018, CAPEXEL ACQUIRED DES PERES-BASED ATON ENVIRONMENTAL, a provider of integrated environmental, health and safety, and real estate transaction support services.

In September 2019, CAPEXEL ACQUIRED THE WOOD RIVER POWER PLANT IN EAST ALTON, ILLINOIS. Terms of that deal were not disclosed.

Just like with the Ohio properties, the company said it planned to repurpose the East Alton site for future development and would meet with stakeholders for input on what that development could entail.
